The idea of Cradle to Cradle is to benefit and not harm the environment.
In 2010, Gabriel A/S was the first Danish company with a Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Silver product (Certification Program version 3).
Cradle to Cradle® Design Philosophy is an entirely new way of thinking about sustainability! Instead of viewing resources on the basis of an “extract, use and discard” perspective, Cradle to Cradle® encourages the design of our lifestyle and consumer goods, where our waste becomes nutrients for future generations of products and raw materials. This is achieved by creating closed circuits with either technical or biological nutrients – with a positive footprint in view. The concept was formulated by the German Michael Braungart and the American William McDonough in 2002, and the ideas behind the concept are spreading in a number of circles.
People have long been conscious of the need to reduce hazardous environmental impacts, but Cradle to Cradle® establishes a different perspective, where our resources are preserved for the future in a sustainable cycle. This is a mind-set which influences the way we develop and produce products, which must be able to enter into a life cycle with no waste.
The result is a certification at one of five levels. The scheme is administered by The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.
Consideration for the surroundings has always been critical for Gabriel, and it is deeply anchored in our environmental management systems. Production since the 1980s has been free of heavy metals, and substantial parts of the product range carry the EU Ecolabel, or the Oeko-Tex health label. This has been an important precondition for success in our Cradle to Cradle work.
Gabriel’s work with Cradle to Cradle began in 2008. Gaining the first certification has been a complicated, but also instructive process, and it has resulted in an even stronger partnership with our suppliers, and the certification has also opened doors to new customers and markets.
MBDC audited the dye works Scandye in Lithuania, which is 49% owned by Gabriel, as a part of the certification of Gabriel’s fabric Gaja, which is Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Silver. Use of cleaner technology, process management and an already implemented and certified environmental management system were critical for completion of the Cradle to Cradle certification.
Gabriel offers 35 standard colours in Gaja C2C, which is a further development of one of Gabriel’s best-known fabrics, Gaja. The colour palette can be extended if a customer has a specific need. Gaja C2C can be composted or recycled in other productions, and like Gabriel’s other fabrics, it contains no hazardous substances.
In 2016, Gaja C2C is re-certified Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Silver, according to version 3.1 of the Certification Program. The performance level corresponds to the silver level in the previous version of the Certification Program (2.1.1).

Gabriel is working further with the Cradle to Cradle Concept in a number of developments. At the same time, QEP-Master has also supplied data on components for customers’ Cradle to Cradle certification of their products.
