The pilot’s take-off from the airport was delayed by a low autumn sun. I was sitting at the window, trying to rid myself of my frustration at the delay. Standing at the edge between the manicured lawn and the asphalt, a row of straw was waving in the breeze. They were ripe, pale ears of grain shining against the dark asphalt and the strongly coloured carpet of grass, a movement which kept the eyes occupied and brought time to a halt.
Later, I described the experience to a supplier of yarn, and together we constructed a fancy yarn in the grass variety flax. The yarn has the same character as the dry grass and is structured so that the effect is irregular along the length with variation in volume. The yarn was called Arlanda after the airport where I conceived the idea.
The flax yarn is woven together with woollen yarns into a pattern in which a mesh is formed and dissolves in the flax yarn’s random play.
This random pattern is reinforced in a graphic contrast when the item is subsequently piece-dyed. When the eye comes to rest on Arlanda, it automatically traces the path of the pale line from disintegration to established mesh.
The colour range is suitable for the soft contract segment. Arlanda has no pattern report, and there will always be a little natural variation from upholstery to upholstery.
