Gabriel is the first Danish company to gain C2C (Cradle to Cradle) certification.

Cradle to Cradle is an entirely new way of thinking about sustainability.

Previous environmental certifications were all based on reducing resources, emissions and the content of toxic substances to minimise damage. But in light of the planet’s condition, it is not enough to simply minimise the damaging effects.

We must organise ourselves and design our products so that they provide a benefit instead of an having a deleterious impact – to ensure that they enter into biological and technical cycles and create balance.

Cradle to Cradle Certified (CM) fabrics
We’re offering 35 standard colours in Gaja, one of our main products.

And if you have specific requirements, we can extend the range to include other colours and designs.

Waste = nourishment
One of the main principles of Cradle to Cradle is to eliminate the concept of waste.

Instead of piling up waste, we turn it into nourishment for nature or for the next generation of products, creating biological and technical cycles where the products are composted or recycled in new production.

Gaining certification is hard work
Consideration for the surroundings has always been a critical point for Gabriel and it is deeply anchored in the company’s environmental and management systems.

Production in the last 20 years has not used any heavy metals, and the company has gained the EU environmental label the Flower and Oeko-Tex certification for almost all its product range.

Work on C2C started more than three years ago and it has been a complicated and expensive process. Unlike other environmental labels, C2C certification requires that the suppliers of chemicals and dyes provide their patented recipes to MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry).

These are business secrets which are traditionally kept closely guarded to avoid copying and undermining of the market.

As part of the certification process, MBDC performed an audit of the dye-works Scandye in Lithuania, which is forty percent owned by Gabriel. Use of the cleanest technology and certified environmental management here were decisive for the certification.
